Future dates TBA, enquire with interest

We will cover

-a brief history and philosophy of accessible design

-types of users to be conscious of and design for

-techniques and technologies for making videos, events, online meetings, and written documents more accessible

-how practicing accessible design can make communication better for everyone

In the last 50 years, in large part thanks to the disability rights movement, “accessibility” has increasingly become recognised as a pillar of both effective and ethical design. It is now an essential consideration when designing any product or service, offering those who are disabled or non-neurotypical to have the same opportunities and ease of access as everyone else. Product and service designers in particular have adapted by building accessible products, as well as retrofitting existing ones with features like wheelchair ramps and braille.

During our current global health crisis, nearly all communication happens online, and it’s not only designers who need to think about accessibility in order to do their jobs well. We all need to learn about accessibility, and build it into the way we think and work to make sure our meetings, events, videos, emails and more can reach everyone. This will remain true even after this crisis, as working is increasingly about remote working and global connections, as well as equality of opportunity.

Luckily, one upside of online communication is that, because it is mediated by technology and requires greater intentionality, it can often be made more accessible than its in-person counterparts. More than this, a focus on accessibility in design can make communication better for everyone, not only those with designated disabilities – improving the lives of groups as diverse as parents, commuters, non-native English speakers and those that are simply weary of having yet another zoom meeting.

Join us to learn not only how you can make your meetings, events, videos, and other online communication more accessible, but also how you can center a wider range of people in the way you communicate and work with people around the world.

This workshop is two and a half hours long, with a 15-minute break. It will involve a mixture of lectures, discussion, individual and group exercise and will take place on zoom. And we’ll send you away with an archive of resources to support your work in the future.

This event has been designed and priced with organisational professional development budgets in mind. However, if you are not part of an organisation and/or would struggle to pay the cost, please don't hesitate to contact the organiser:
